The Commissioner for Children and Young People, the Parliament of South Australia and the Department for Education invited all teachers and pre-service teachers to a series of Civics and Citizenship themed professional learning sessions in Term 2. Importantly, the seminars are joined by the Governor, academics, and other guest speakers to help make your Civics and Citizenship programs engaging.

Seminars

Government House – The Role of the Governor – For all Teachers, Years 5–12

Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC talked about her role as South Australia’s Governor, and took questions from participants. This also included discussions about the purpose and nature of the Governor’s Civics Awards for Schools and how to enter.

SAPOL – Student Education Programs – For all Teachers, Years 3–12

SAPOL’s Acting Community Engagement Supervisor outlined SAPOL’s education programs for school students. Also, this included a demonstration of one of the student cyber safety programs. 

State & Federal Parliaments – Tips on Teaching Parliament – For HASS Teachers, Years 5–12

Federal and State Parliament Education Teams provide handy hints on how to bring content about Parliament to life in classrooms. This included what new and proven programs and resources are available to support teaching. Furthermore, the session sought to further teachers understanding of the curriculum content.

Legal Services Commission – Understanding the Court Hierarchy – For HASS Teachers, Years 7–12

The Education Team from the Legal Services Commission covered the hierarchy of South Australia’s court system. Also, how students and young workers can access free legal advice and information should they ever need it.

SA Commissioner for Children and Young People – yChange: Civics in Action – For all Teachers, Years 3–12

SA’s Commissioner for Children and Young People, Helen Connolly talked about her work providing children and young people with a voice. Participants also heard about yChange – SA’s first curriculum aligned, project based, action civics resource. Specifically, The Commissioner created yChange to support primary and secondary educators teaching civics and citizenship.

Department for Education, Green Adelaide and the Holocaust Museum – Civics and Citizenship Programs and Resources – For all Teachers, Years 3–12

Learning opportunities offered by Green Adelaide and the Holocaust Museum. Also joined by Tara Baron (Curriculum Manager 7–10 HASS, Department for Education) who provided an overview of the Civics and Citizenship resource units developed by the Department for Education.

University of Adelaide – Media Literacy and Democracy – For all Teachers, Years 7–12

Dr Kim Barbour from the University of Adelaide explored how the media influences political choices and identities, and impacts attitudes toward Australia’s democracy.

Kuma Kaaru – Importance of Kaurna Language with Jack Buckskin – For all Teachers, Years R–12

Jack Buckskin provides a seminar about the importance of Kaurna Language in this special session held during NAIDOC Week (3-10 July: “We all must continue to Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up”).
