The work of CCYP is guided by an international treaty, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). One of the Commissioner’s primary roles is to promote the rights of children and young people in South Australia and advocate for systemic change. The creation of this position was recommended by Royal Commissioner Margaret Nyland in the Child Protection Systems Royal Commission Report 2016.

It is proposed that the Children’s Commissioner will be independent of ministerial direction, and will be encouraged to engage children in the process of making decisions affecting their lives, undertake research and publish reports.

The Commissioner’s Annual Report 2016-17 was presented to the Minister for Education and Child Development on 29 September 2017.

The annual report is available here on the website.

The Commissioner’s functions according to the Children and Young People (Oversight and Advocacy Bodies) Act 2016 includes undertaking or commissioning research into topics related to children and young people. The research will inform our future work, research and advice to improve the outcomes of children and young people in SA.
