Certainly not the children of Mount Gambier, they rate their local library as one of the best places to go in town!
Helen, the Commissioner for Children and Young People, launched her Listening Tour in Mount Gambier in June and by spending some time at the Mount Gambier Library we got to see first-hand why it is so popular.
The Library isn’t just about books, it is has a Kids space which runs children’s programs like Baby bounce and Storytime, there’s the café where the Youth Advisory Committee meet and others just ‘hang out’. One young person explained that the “the library is cool because it has free Wi-Fi, it’s loud, busy and there is a study room.
The library indeed was a hive of activity; it was amicable and has a real community focus, ensuring that everyone feels welcome. One of the Library staff told us about some of the many benefits of their being such an inclusive space, she described it as being a community hub, bringing generations together as well as ensuring there is a comfortable and safe place for all to visit. Who knew a library could be all of that and still be described by a whole lot of children and young people as being COOL. And yes there still are plenty of books to be found!
