In 2020, the Commissioner sought to better understand children and young people’s thoughts about the devices and data they use, how important this is in their lives, how they engage with the digital world, and whether they have any issues accessing the Internet or digital devices.
Over 250 young people aged 10-20 years participated in the Devices, Data and Digital Life Survey, with 161 responding via the paper-based version and 93 completing the survey online.
The issues that survey responses most frequently mentioned included:
- The cost of devices
- Not having a stable internet connection
- Feeling unsafe without a phone
- Limited storage space
- The cost of connecting to the Internet
- Sharing a device with others
From the comments and experiences of these young people, the Commissioner produced My Digital Life.
