The Family Law Inquiry

The Family Law Inquiry

What is it?

In September 2017, the then Attorney General of Australia George Brandis announced that the Australian Law Review Commission (ALRC) would undertake its first comprehensive review of the family law system since the commencement of the Family Law Act in 1976.

We made a submission to the ALRC as we had been hearing from families and concerned community members about the negative impact the family law system appeared to have on the children around them. The biggest concern was that the children were saying that they did not have a voice in the system so could not articulate what they wanted. As a family law decision impacts the child’s life the most we thought it was important to explore this further. We will be talking to children and parents who have been through the family law system about how the system could be improved to better support children and families.
